Govt's Downgrade Of Methane Target Accounting Trick With Devastating Real-world Consequences

Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand

Luxon's Government halving of methane targets under the guise of "no additional warming" is a cheap accounting trick that will cost our country dearly.

"Today Christopher Luxon has downgraded climate ambition, meaning a higher cost of living and ultimately far worse outcomes for the farmers he says he's doing this for," says the Green Party Co-leader and Climate Change spokesperson, Chlöe Swarbrick.

"Methane is a superheating gas - 80 times stronger at frying our atmosphere than carbon in the short-term. To keep a liveable plant we must cut methane emissions.

"The 'no additional warming' deception, cooked up by corporate lobbyists, is pseudoscientific rubbish that dumps cost and risk onto all of us right now, not to mention our grandchildren.

"This methane denial betrays farmers who are on the front line of climate-driven extreme weather events that threaten global food production and rural livelihoods"

"After dishing out subsidies for fossil fuels, today Christopher Luxon again shows his priorities are backing our biggest polluters' profits at the cost of everyone and everything else.

"With so-called 'one in one hundred year' weather events hitting us with increasing frequency, responsible leadership means real action to cut climate pollution. The Greens have shown how we can rapidly reduce climate heating pollution, reduce the cost of living and improve our quality of life.

"Many farmers are innovating farming with lower emissions - not by denying the climate problem but by facing it.

"A resilient and flourishing country and economy is possible. The first step to getting there is kicking out Luxon and his corporate cronies," says Chlöe Swarbrick.
