- More than $150,000 in grants delivered to 17 organisations across Western Australia
- Supporting initiatives that work with and for LGBTIQA+ people and communities to build a safer and more inclusive WA
The Cook Labor Government has announced 17 successful recipients of the LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Grants, as part of today's recognition of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
IDAHOBIT is celebrated every year on 17 May, to mark the date in 1990 that homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organisation's Classification of Diseases.
The grants will fund initiatives that work with and for LGBTIQA+ people and communities towards building a safer and more inclusive WA, aligning with the priority areas of Western Australia's first whole-of-government LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Strategy 2025-2035.
The LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Grants and IDAHOBIT are a reminder that members of WA's LGBTIQA+ community still face discrimination, stigma, and exclusionthat affect their every-day lives, safety, and wellbeing.
This year, the grants will support initiatives and projects across WA, such as:
Kimberley Blak Pride - to build organisational and local community capability, broker partnerships for investment and support the delivery of a Kimberley-specific regional LGBTIQA+ strategic plan;
Pride with Disability Network - to undertake the Make Space For Us visual art project, which will feature creative sessions for LGBTIQA+ people with disability;
The Kids Research Institute Australia - to undertake the Moort Pride Yarns project, which will provide space and resources for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQA+ people; and
Youth Focus - to deliver Geraldton's Pride Tide Festival, a safe, supportive, alcohol-free live music event for 14-25 year olds to celebrate Pride Month.
