The sounds of local talent echoed through Griffith Regional Theatre on Sunday, 2 August as performers took to the stage for the annual Grass Roots Open Mic, celebrating the creativity, passion and diversity of the region's musicians.
Drawing an enthusiastic audience, the event featured a mix of original music and crowd-favourite covers, with performers of all ages competing for valuable development opportunities and performance prizes.
Now in its eighth year, Grass Roots continues to provide a platform for both emerging and established artists, offering a welcoming space for local musicians to share their talent and connect with audiences. Contestants competed across a range of categories, with prizes including live performance opportunities, mentoring sessions, and music vouchers to support their artistic journeys.
The event was judged by three local musicians, Grass Roots founder Ben Ceccato, Lachlan Pendlebury and Max Jones. Grass Roots alumni J.R.V.U (Jesse Aviu) and Belle Madden hosted the event and the audience was also treated to an original performance from judge Max.
This year's winners included:
- Under 21 Best Original Song: Marquez and Tommy - they earned a one-on-one mentoring session provided SongMakers.
- Open Best Original Song: Witchan who received a one-on-one mentoring session with producer Audius, provided by ArtFarm.
- Under 21 Judge's Choice Award: Tatum Parsons won a performance opportunity at the Griffith Regional Theatre's 2027 Season Launch.
- Open Judge's Choice Award: 'Potent' won performance opportunity at the Long Lunch at Piccolo Family Farm event on Sunday 25 October 2026.
- Under 21 People's Choice Award: Noah Echevarria won a $250 Living Music voucher.
- Open People's Choice Award: 'Potent' won a $250 Living Music voucher.
Notable mentions went to From the Upper Room Band, Ofa Liu, Chevie Dunbar, Sofia D'Aquino, Nancy TieTie, ZALE, Abbey Farrell and Christian Callinan, The Sonix, and The Ghoastz.
ArtFarm Director Bonnie Owen praised the quality of performances on display.

The event highlighted the strength of Griffith's vibrant music community, with several standout performances earning special recognition from judges and audiences alike.
