Greens Urge Perrottet, Minns to Freeze Rents Amid Increase

Australian Greens

Renters are continuing to be hit with unprecedented rent hikes, according to data released today by PropTrack.

With rents jumping by as much as 39% in some NSW suburbs, the Greens are calling on Perrottet and Minns to stop sitting on their hands and commit to an immediate rent freeze and ban on unfair evictions.

Jenny Leong MP, Greens spokesperson for Housing and Renters and Member for Newtown, said:

"The cost of rent is out of control. It's not good enough for Perrottet and Minns to keep sitting idly by while renters struggle with unprecedented rent hikes and the chronic insecurity of renting.

"The Greens are calling on Perrottet and Minns to actually do something for the 2 million people in NSW who rent.

"The Greens want to see an immediate freeze on rents and ban on unfair evictions to halt the day-to-day stress renters are feeling, while an independent rent control body is established to bring down the cost of rent.

"The first thing I'll do when Parliament goes back is introduce a rent freeze bill to get rents under control.

"NSW Labor and Liberal need to be clear on whether they'll support this rent freeze to address the serious stress renters are feeling, so people know before they head to the ballot box where the major parties stand on addressing out of control rent hikes.

"Without rent freezes, rent caps and rent controls, rents will just continue to rise unchecked and renters will not be able to afford a place to live - and continue to feel more and more financial stress.

"We need to draw a line under the ruthless profit motive of housing so that everyone can have an affordable place to live."
