A key stretch of Grenville Street North is undergoing a major upgrade, with works to deliver a new shared path to make walking and cycling safer, easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
The Grenville Street North Shared Path Project will provide a vital link between Mair Street and the Bridge Mall, connecting Ballarat's central precinct to the Yarrowee River Trail and Brown Hill track, and filling a gap in the city's active transport network.
Local contractor Butler Excavations has been contracted to carry out the works, and City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the upgrade is creating spaces that support healthier, more connected communities.
"This project is another example of how we're building a city that works for everyone, whether you're commuting by bike, walking with your family, or simply enjoying the outdoors," she said.
"We're investing in safer streets, greener spaces and better connections."
The project is jointly funded by the State Government's Safe Systems Road Infrastructure Program ($435,000) and the City of Ballarat ($550,000) and supports the goals of the Ballarat Integrated Transport Action Plan 2020 and the Ballarat Cycling Action Plan 2017-2025.
"We're pleased to be partnering with the City of Ballarat to deliver safer connections along this crucial stretch in the heart of Ballarat," Juliana Addison MP, Member for Wendouree, said.
"It's what the Systems Road Infrastructure Program is all about, providing life-saving infrastructure that will help more people get home safely."
The works include:
- A 2.5 metre wide shared path and two raised pedestrian crossings
- Road and parking realignment to improve safety and access
- Street lighting upgrades for improved visibility
- Tree planting and garden beds to enhance the streetscape
- An accessible parking bay
- Street furniture including bike racks, seating and wayfinding signage.
Construction will be completed in two stages, with the first stage to continue through to early December.
During the Christmas period, safety measures will remain in place with clear signage and detours to support local businesses and residents throughout the busy shopping period.
The project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
