Hammering Home Support For Men's Shed

NT Government

The Darwin Men's Shed is another step closer to completion thanks to a $100,000 investment from the Finocchiaro CLP Government to help establish its new facility in Marrara.

The additional support will ensure the not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation has the equipment it needs to deliver skills training, community projects and men's health programs when the new shed opens.

Minister for Youth, Seniors and Equality, Jinson Charls said the Darwin Men's Shed plays a vital role in promoting community connections and providing opportunities for men to share skills and give back to the community.

"The $100,000 from the CLP Government will help ensure the new facility is equipped to support its members and continue delivering programs that make a real difference."

"It's fitting that we make this announcement during Men's Shed Week, which shines a light on the incredible role Men's Sheds play in supporting men's wellbeing and strengthening communities across the Northern Territory and Australia."

"After six years of planning, the Darwin Men's Shed has reached a major milestone in our year of action, certainty, and security - selecting a builder for the project and preparing to begin construction," said Mr Charls.

The new facility will feature several sheds with training rooms, workshops, meeting rooms, a kitchen, offices and storage space.

Darwin Men's Shed President Brian Harvey said the Darwin Men's Shed is grateful to receive this funding from the CLP Government.

"With the new facility, we can deliver greater skill - building workshops, provide a safe space for social connection, and expand our outreach to isolated community members.

"Once the facility is complete, we look forward to welcoming even more members and expanding our programs to better serve the entire community," said Mr Harvey.

Member for Fannie Bay, Laurie Zio said she welcomed the government's $100,000 contribution to the Shed's new build.

"I have been advocating for additional financial support for this important project, as their current location in Coconut Grove is far too small and has subsequently diminished the growth of the organisation."

"This investment reflects our government's commitment to delivering the facilities our community deserves. The Men's Shed plays a vital role in fostering participation, connection, and wellbeing, and this redevelopment will provide long-term benefits for its members, local residents and the community," said Mrs Zio.

The shed is already a hub of activity, with members working together on projects that support local schools, charities and community organisations. Recent projects have included:

building children's mud kitchens and workbenches for Darwin schoolsrepairing furniture and making hives for native beesrestoring and donating bikes to the Mums on Bikes program, with shipments sent to Nhulunbuy for distribution to remote communities.

Established in 2011, Darwin Men's Shed provides a space for men of all ages - including returned veterans and new migrants - to meet, share skills, socialise and work on meaningful community projects.
