Handcuffed NSW man drives off in police car

A handcuffed man drove off in a police car after he was put in the rear of the car by police who were collecting details from a victim outside.

An off-duty officer witnessed an alleged domestic violence, in which a woman suffered a laceration to a hand, on South Seas Drive at Ashtonfield, southeast of Maitland, just before 10:30am Sunday, NSW police say.

After police were contacted, they arrived at the scene and handcuffed the man and placed in the back of the police car while details were taken from the victim.

Apparently, handcuffs didn’t prevent the 32-year old from his probable childhood dream of driving a police car.

The man jumped into the driver’s seat of the police vehicle and drove off while handcuffed. A short time later he crashed the car into two parked cars and a car port, extensively damaging all three cars and scratching the car port.

Police took him to Maitland Police Station and charged with nine offences including common assault, take & drive conveyance, disqualified driving, escape police custody and reckless wounding.

He will appear before Maitland Local Court today on Monday.
