The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn in the Lake Innes Nature Reserve starting today Thursday 16 April.
The aim of the two-day burn will be to reduce the fuel hazard south of the Brierly Hill, Ruins Way estate in Lake Innes Nature Reserve to reduce the spread of fire and to maintain biodiversity in the area.
Access to Ruins Way and Boundary Trail will be closed during burn operations and people must not enter the reserve beyond the marked closure points.
The favourable autumn weather conditions provide a critical opportunity for fuel reduction burning and NPWS, along with neighbours and other agencies, has numerous prescribed burns, including cultural burns, planned across NSW.
NPWS will be assisted by NSW Rural Fire Service crews for some of the burns, and these burns are just some of many being undertaken by NPWS across NSW, as conditions allow.
Nearby residents and drivers are advised to take care as smoke may impact nearby areas and roads. People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors, close windows and doors and follow their health plan.
Roads and trails will be reopened once the areas are assessed as safe. Visitors must check NPWS Alerts for up -to-date information on closures.
Local accumulations of smoke around the burn are likely. If you are vulnerable to smoke, try to stay indoors, keeping doors and windows closed to reduce your exposure.
