The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), together with Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), is undertaking two hazard reduction burns in Sydney metropolitan area one in Sydney Harbour National Park and another at Scheyville National Park Thursday 9 September.
In Sydney Harbour the Grotto Point hazard reduction burn behind Ogilvy Road will be east of Castle Rock and Washaway Beach walking track at Grotto Point.
During the burn operations Castle Rock Track, Washaway Beach Track, Lighthouse Track and Grotto Point Track will be closed.
The Scheyville National Park burn the Allotment hazard reduction burn is part of an on-going fuel management program to reduce the risk to properties from potential bushfires.
During this burn Camp precinct will remain open however, Allotment Trail, Silo Trail, Dormitory Trail and The Avenue Trail will be closed.
COVID-19 safety briefings are provided to all staff who are required to wear masks along with their normal fire personal protective equipment.
Contact tracing is also enabled via the QR code sign-in all fire crews must complete when starting.
There may be smoke across a wide area and people are reminded to exercise caution and drive to conditions when using roads in the area.
Smoke from bush fires and hazard reduction burning can affect some people more than others.
NSW Health reminds people that children, older adults and people with heart and lung conditions are most susceptible to the effects of air pollution and excessive smoke.
If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
All burns across NSW will continue to be coordinated with the RFS to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level.
