Statement attributable to Daniel Knapp, headspace National Executive Director - First Nations Wellbeing and Engagement:
headspace stands with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people who may be feeling hurt or affected following recent ANZAC Day booing and the online commentary surrounding it.
For many First Nations peoples, conducting or receiving a Welcome to Country is an important cultural practice that has been maintained by First Nations people for thousands of years. A Welcome to Country is an important reminder that we all live on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands and is a mark of respect for Country, Elders, Traditional Owners and Culture.
When Culture is not recognised or respected, it can have a deep impact on young people's social and emotional wellbeing, shaping how they see themselves and their place in the world. We know that a strong sense of identity, Culture and belonging is central to wellbeing.
To any First Nations young people who feel hurt, frustrated, upset or affected by what occurred, we want you to know we see you. Your Culture is something to be proud of and it deserves to be respected.
headspace remains committed to supporting the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and to creating spaces where Culture is recognised, respected and valued.
If you or someone you know needs support or someone to yarn with, help is available. You can contact 13YARN or Lifeline for crisis support or reach out to headspace for free and confidential support via headspace.org.au.
