Healing land, spirit and people

Healing Ceremony with our Traditional Custodians

The City of Stonnington will hold a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation, following the Citizenship ceremony on Wednesday, 26 January 2022.

The ceremony will be led by Wurundjeri Elder, Aunty Diane Kerr and a traditional dance performance by Nhanbu Togip to pay respect and acknowledge their living connection to Country, relationship with the land and all living things extending back tens of thousands of years.

Smoking ceremonies help people connect to country. By burning native leaves, the smoke is believed to have healing and cleansing properties and to ward off bad spirits.

The ceremony supports Council's Reconciliation journey and provides an opportunity for the community to learn about what the day means to Traditional Custodians.
