Independent Research Fund Denmark is granting DKK 53.4 million to research focusing on the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, aiming to strengthen Denmark's position in the international competition for AI development.
Helene Friis Ratner receives the grant for her research project 'AI in the Welfare state: Accountability and Responsibility at stake (AWARE)'.
Municipalities across Denmark are increasingly using artificial intelligence to support decision-making. However, when AI helps shape decisions, it becomes more challenging to understand how those decisions are made – and who is ultimately responsible for them. With her research project, Helene Friis Ratner aims to generate new knowledge about how accountability can be ensured when AI becomes part of the public sector. The project will result in a practical tool to help municipalities use AI in a transparent and trustworthy manner.
