For the second time, the University of Helsinki is publishing its 30 under 30 list, highlighting promising young people from a range of fields. Nominations can be submitted until 31 May.
In early 2027 the University of Helsinki will organise Kipinä Future Forum for the second time to bring together researchers, policymakers, business leaders and future changemakers. As part of this event, a new list will be published of 30 emerging talents aged under 30 who are shaping the future. Nominations are now being sought for the list.
"We at the University of Helsinki have a huge number of young people each leaving their mark on society and their community on a daily basis. With the 30 under 30 list, we wish to highlight the diverse engagement of the University's younger generation in different sectors. At the same time, we are showing prospective students examples of the numerous paths on which university education can take them," says Vice-Rector Hanna Snellman.
The first list, published in February 2025, included Milja Kalliosaari, Master of Social Sciences, who works as Government Relations Manager at the quantum computer company IQM.
Self-confidence, pride and new opportunities
For Kalliosaari, being nominated was a pleasant and meaningful surprise that boosted her ambition and self-confidence.
"It felt great to have someone pay attention to my slightly unusual career path. It also reminded me of the importance of demonstrating that degree titles are not tied to specific careers," Kalliosaari says.
Her inclusion on the list made Kalliosaari's successes feel real and gave her cause for pride. Perseverance, a purposeful career path and recognition - such as nomination on the 30 under 30 list - have opened up new opportunities.
"It's hard to pinpoint the reasons, but I was admitted to the 255th national defence course for influential individuals as the youngest participant. That was a major achievement," Kalliosaari says.
Kalliosaari describes the 30 under 30 list as an important acknowledgement for young people shaping the future.
"I appreciate the willingness of the University of Helsinki to highlight its community members. For me, it's a meaningful recognition of not only scholarship and the academic community, but also of young people who are building the future," she sums up.
Submit your nominations now
The 30 under 30 list showcases not only academically outstanding individuals but also influential young people shaping their communities and society in positive ways.
Eligible for nomination are not only junior researchers and students, but also a wide range of representatives across the cultural and organisational sector, business life, startups and other professions, such as teaching and journalism. All those selected must be affiliated with the University of Helsinki through their studies, research or work.
You can suggest for nomination individuals born in 1997 or later. The selection will emphasise initiative, inquisitiveness and the ability to introduce new perspectives to public discussion. Proposals should be accompanied by brief justifications.
Proposals must be submitted by 31 May. The list will be published in early at Future Forum Kipinä, a forum for discussions on themes affecting Finland's future, with varying emphasis. The young people selected for the 30 under 30 list will be invited to the event.
