High-pressure environments, high-performance expectations, teamwork and camaraderie are traits shared by professional sport and military service.
These shared values were on display when the Newcastle Knights visited RAAF Base Williamtown as part of their preparation for the upcoming NRL Anzac Round.
Players spent time gaining an appreciation of the professionalism, discipline and high-tempo operations that underpin day-to-day life on an operational ADF base.
Air Force personnel showcased the diverse capabilities that contribute to Australia's air power and national security while reflecting on the meaning of Anzac Day.
Squadron Leader Matthew Holecek, of 77 Squadron, and members of 4 Squadron, shared their operational experiences, outlining the demanding nature of their roles and the teamwork required to perform effectively under pressure.
"A mission takes preparation. Just like game day, it is a whole-team approach - we cannot achieve our goal alone," Squadron Leader Holecek said.
Parallels between military service and professional sport were recognised, particularly the emphasis on preparation, trust and composure under pressure. In both fields, individuals rely on their teams, training and discipline to perform at their best.
"We are often exposed to high-pressure situations. Much like a game day, we need to stay cool, calm and collected to achieve our mission," Squadron Leader Holecek said.
The Knights participated in a dynamic display by 1 Security Forces Squadron, which demonstrated the skills required to protect personnel, infrastructure and assets in challenging environments.
A demonstration by the 26 Squadron Military Working Dog team also gave players a glimpse into the capabilities supporting base security.
The players said spending time with serving members provided a tangible connection to the people behind Australia's Defence Force and a greater understanding of the sacrifices made by service personnel and their families.
