Highlighting Essential Role Of Our Oceans

Every year on June 8, World Oceans Day acknowledges the essential role our oceans play in sustaining life on Earth.

At Maritime NZ, we contribute to protecting these waters through the Marine Protection Rules , which help reduce environmental harm from ballast water, garbage, air emissions, harmful substances, and oil pollution.

With 99.7% of New Zealand's trade by volume transported by sea, safeguarding our marine environment is vital. These rules ensure ships have the appropriate systems in place to prevent pollution and minimise their impact.

Many of New Zealand's marine protection regulations are aligned with the International Maritime Organization, of which we are a member. This allows us to take a consistent, international approach to maritime safety and environmental protection.

Importantly, many of these rules don't just apply to commercial shipping-they also apply to recreational vessels. Whether you're out fishing or cruising, everyone has a role to play in protecting our marine environment. Find out what you can do as a recreational boatie.

Together, we can keep our oceans healthy and thriving for generations to come.
