Patients on the NSW South Coast can now access hip resurfacing surgery locally, following the successful introduction of the procedure at Nowra Private Hospital, operated by Ramsay Health Care.
The surgery was performed by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Paul Thornton-Bott and expands the range of orthopaedic treatment options available in the region. Hip resurfacing is a specialised bone-preserving alternative to total hip replacement and may be suitable for selected patients, depending on individual clinical assessment.
Unlike traditional hip replacement, which removes the femoral head and neck, (the ball of the ball-and-socket hip joint), hip resurfacing involves reshaping and capping the existing head and resurfacing the socket. This approach is designed to preserve more of the patient's natural anatomy, providing increased stability and improved mobility and function following surgery.
Dr Thornton-Bott has more than 20 years' experience in hip and knee joint replacement, hip resurfacing and trauma surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons (UK) and applies evidence-based techniques focused on safe surgery, early mobilisation and recovery.
"Hip resurfacing can be an excellent option for more active patients, as it preserves bone and supports more natural movement of the hip joint, allowing them to comfortably run and participate in sports, even at a high level," Dr Thornton-Bott said.
"The introduction of a new, ceramic hip resurfacing means we can now offer this technology to all active patients, irrespective of sex or size."
