Historic Port Pilot Station Revamp Design Complete

  • $8.3 million transformation of Port of Albany's State heritage-listed pilot cottages one step closer
  • Southern Ports and H+H Architects turn precinct concept into detailed design
  • New space to unlock opportunity for community to be immersed in the port's history
  • Cook Government delivering projects that foster vibrant, creative communities

Designs set to transform the heritage-listed Port of Albany Pilot Station into a vibrant community precinct have been finalised.

Developed by Southern Ports and Albany-based H+H Architects, the designs are centred around the repurposing of heritage-listed Pilot Crew Quarters and Coxswain's Quarters buildings.

The plans will breathe new life to the heritage buildings and surrounds, adding a playground, landscaping, bike facilities, and other amenities. Allowance for mobile catering facilities such as a coffee van have also been made.

Taking advantage of the unique perspective views overlooking the channel between King George Sound to Princess Royal Harbour, the design allows for internal and outdoor seating as well as open grassed areas for the community to enjoy.

Opportunities to further activate the space, such as interpretation centre elements, a gallery and workshop, are also being considered.

The Pilot Station precinct has a long history in the region, used to house Port of Albany marine pilots from as early as 1853 through to 1936, and its importance to Western Australia's first port was recognised through its inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places in 2002.

Construction on the project, funded by Royalties for Regions, is set to commence in 2026 with a tender period for companies seeking to deliver the refurbishment open until 16 December 2025.

As stated by Regional Development and Ports Minister Stephen Dawson:

"Plans to transform the historic Port of Albany Pilot Station precinct from an underutilised space into an asset for the community are one step closer.

"The detailed design stays true to Southern Ports' original concept for the precinct, which was to create a community recreational space while sharing the Port of Albany's unique story.

"This project is at the heart of what the Royalties for Regions program was designed for, to develop areas of Western Australia to support strong and vibrant regional communities."

As stated by Heritage Minister Simone McGurk:

"Celebrating the rich history of the Port of Albany and its significant role in WA's history is at the forefront of this project.

"The Pilot Station was key to the development of WA's first and oldest port and its significance deserves to be centre stage of a thriving tourism area."

As stated by Great Southern Minister Reece Whitby:

"The final design ensures this picturesque area of the Great Southern will be put on show while offering a rare insight into two centuries of the location's history, which includes many families living on this site.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together to foster an even greater appreciation for the role the region has played shaping our State."
