A Certificate of Merit was awarded to "Reimagining a Future-ready Kennedy Town and Mount Davis," a project led by HKU's Master of Science in Urban Planning (MUP) Strategic & Community Planning Studio.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is pleased to announce that its faculty, students, and alumni of the Faculty of Architecture have been honoured with awards at this year's Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) Awards. in recognition of their outstanding achievements in town planning, aiming to raise public awareness of good planning principles and practices while encouraging excellence among planners in Hong Kong, mainland China, and neighbouring areas. HKIP will hold an award ceremony in November.

The Young Planners Awards (YPA) were also introduced to recognize the active participation and significant contributions made by young planners in the planning profession and community affairs. These awards foster professionalism, dedication, and enthusiasm among the next generation of planners.

A Certificate of Merit was awarded to "Reimagining a Future-ready Kennedy Town and Mount Davis," a project led by HKU's Master of Science in Urban Planning (MUP) Strategic & Community Planning Studio. Infused with Net-zero, Smart and Sustainability elements and backed by comprehensive stakeholder engagement exercises, the planning study aims to capture future development potentials of the district as a strategic cavern area and a new regional and territorial economic and I&T anchor.

The studio's faculty members, including Adjunct Professors Mr Elvis Au Wai Kwong and Prof Ling Kar Kan, Honorary Professor Prof Tang Bo Sin, Adjunct Associate Professor Dr Kenneth Tang Siu Sing, Part-time Lecturer Ms Christina Lo Oi Ling, Senior Lecturer Mr Roger Tang Man Hung and current MUP students Mr Foo Chun Kau, Ms Ho Ka Pui, Ms Luo Wenting, Ms Ma Fong Ching, Ms Chow Sin Yau, Ms Lui Chin Yan, Mr Michael Luk Man Ho and Mr Yuen Chak Long, were recognized for their exemplary work.

"Using Hong Kong, Mainland, and beyond as its living laboratories, MUP aims to train urban planners and related professionals and officials for the future," said Dr Jiangping Zhou, MUP Programme Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design. "By working with various local and overseas stakeholders, MUP teachers, students, and alumni are also effortlessly searching for and proposing feasible solutions to challenges faced by communities, cities, and regions of today and tomorrow." MUP is the only programme of its kind in Hong Kong that is fully accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute in the UK.

Past MUP graduates Mr Adrian Chiu Sung Ngai, Mr Cecil Chow Chun Chi and Ms Amanda Yu Tze Yan, as well as Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies graduates Mr Joseph Junior Ho and Mr Kong Ka Chun received a Certificate of Merit for their project "Curating Smithfield". Mr Arthur Yeung Tsz Chun, who graduated from MUP programme in 2019, received a Certificate of Merit for the project "A Living Museum: Point-Line-Plane Conservation of the Ma On Shan Iron Mine Landscape".

An Honourable Mention for Promotion of Planning in Hong Kong was presented to Mr Au Fai, Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Architecture, and Ms Sunnie Lau S Y, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design. The YPA Certificate of Outstanding Achievement was awarded to Ms Mandy Wong Man Kwan, a 2017 MUP graduate.
