Homelessness Working Group Re-established

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

We're pleased to announce during Homelessness Week that the City has recently re-established the Greater Geelong Homelessness Working Group to tackle this growing issue in our region.

Data shows that throughout 2023-24, 4,604 people received support for homelessness in Greater Geelong. Of those, 44 per cent were survivors of family and domestic violence, 12 per cent were First Nations people and 9 per cent were young people.

On any given night, the estimated population of people experiencing homelessness in Greater Geelong is 1,546.

The City-led group brings together organisations working with people experiencing homelessness and agencies with funding and policy responsibility, to make positive change for people experiencing homelessness. Towards Home+ Geelong, The Orange Door, Victoria Police, Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, Meli and The Salvation Army are just some of the stakeholders represented.

Having met several times already, the monthly group is gaining a clearer picture of homelessness in the Geelong region by sharing local data, identifying emerging issues and collaborating on projects, policy and funding initiatives.

By working together, members are aiming to help improve services to support people experiencing homelessness and identify opportunities for action, collaboration and information sharing.

The Greater Geelong Homelessness Working Group will be informed by the 'Home Truths: Local Insights in Homelessness Report', launched today and jointly funded by Council, Anthony Costa Foundation, Geelong Community Foundation, Geelong Connected Communities and Give Where You Live Foundation.

While the City doesn't provide a direct housing or emergency service, the organisation continues to maintain strong relationships with the sector.

In May, Council approved the granting of a long-term lease for the development of social housing at 116–120 Purnell Road, Corio.

This decision demonstrates our commitment through the Social Housing Plan 2020 – 2041 to increase the supply of social housing.
