The Tasmanian Government pays its deepest respects to Flight Lieutenant Roger Brian Winspear (Retd) AM following the sad news of his passing.

Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Jacquie Petrusma, said Mr Winspear's name is etched in history as a distinguished veteran and a visionary contributor to Tasmania's tourism and hospitality industry.

"Brian Winspear's story is one of courage, innovation, and a dedicated love for his country," Minister Petrusma said.

"His legacy is one of resilience and unwavering commitment to his country and community.

"Mr Winspear's journey inspires our current generations to honour the past, appreciate the present, and build for the future."

Mr Winspear joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1940 at the age of 19. His remarkable military career saw him stationed in Darwin and later across Timor and Borneo until his discharge in 1945.

During the first Darwin bombings, he sustained minor injuries when he was hit by shell splinters in his eye and hand but continued his service with remarkable fortitude.

His squadron was later honoured with a Presidential Citation Medal from the United States of America.

In his later years, Mr Winspear championed the commemoration of the sacrifices made by his fellow servicemen.

His advocacy, alongside the Order of Australia Association and the City of Darwin Council, led to the establishment of a bronze plaque on Darwin's Cenotaph, ensuring the legacy of those who fought and lost their lives would never fade.

Beyond his military achievements, Mr Winspear's influence extended into the realms of business and tourism.

His contributions to the development of the Bicheno area on the East Coast stand as a testament to his visionary leadership and commitment to progress.

Mr Winspear was awarded the Advance Australia Award in 1982 and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993 for his services to the tourism and hospitality industry.
