The Johns Hopkins Police Accountability Board is seeking applicants for its 2027–28 term, offering members of the Johns Hopkins and Baltimore communities an opportunity to provide feedback and help inform the development, policies, training, and operations of the Johns Hopkins Police Department.
Applications will open Sept. 30 and are due by Oct. 13. All are encouraged to apply.
The accountability board was established as part of the Community Safety and Strengthening Act of 2019 and serves as an important mechanism for community input, transparency, and accountability. The board includes representatives from Johns Hopkins as well as residents of Baltimore communities surrounding Johns Hopkins campuses.
For the upcoming term, the board anticipates filling nine seats, including individuals that represent the Homewood, Peabody, and East Baltimore campuses and adjacent communities, faculty, staff, and both undergraduate and graduate JHU students.
The board's work includes gathering and sharing community feedback, reviewing publicly available crime data and other information related to the Johns Hopkins Police Department, reviewing JHPD policies, procedures, and training, and making recommendations to JHPD leadership.
Through regular meetings, committee work, and engagement with members of the Hopkins and Baltimore communities, board members have an opportunity to raise questions, identify community concerns, and contribute perspectives that can help shape the department's policies and operations. The board's membership is designed to bring together a range of perspectives and experiences. Students, faculty, staff, and community members who are interested in public safety, community engagement, transparency, and accountability are encouraged to consider applying.
How to apply
Applications for the 2027–28 Johns Hopkins Police Accountability Board will be available beginning Sept. 30 and must be completed by Oct. 13.
Interested applicants should review the eligibility requirements and application information available through the Johns Hopkins Public Safety website.
Community members, university departments, student organizations, neighborhood associations, and other partners are also encouraged to share the application opportunity with individuals who may be interested in serving.
The accountability board provides a direct avenue for members of the Hopkins and surrounding communities to share concerns, provide feedback, and participate in conversations about the development and operation of the Johns Hopkins Police Department. The board must meet at least quarterly and hold at least one public meeting each year to seek input on JHPD policies, procedures, and training from community members.
