Horsham Cricket: Dudley Cornell Oval Wicket Upgrade

Horsham Rural City Council has secured funding of $7,222 through the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund to deliver a transformative upgrade to the synthetic wicket at Dudley Cornell Oval 2 strengthening local cricket and creating more opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.

The Pitch Renewal Project will replace the existing narrow and deteriorated wicket and concrete base with a new, modern synthetic playing surface built to current standards (28m x 2.8m). The upgrade will deliver a safer, more consistent, and fit-for-purpose facility for junior, senior, and community cricket.

Mayor Cr Brian Klowss said the investment would make a tangible difference for players and the broader Horsham cricket community.

"The existing synthetic wicket at Dudley Cornell Oval 2 is narrow and poor condition, which limits the quality of play and the ability to schedule matches and training," said Cr Klowss.

"Renewing the wicket will deliver a widened, appropriately lined playing surface that meets modern standards and provides a consistent and safe environment for participants."

A key venue for junior cricket and Woolworths Cricket Blast programs, Dudley Cornell Oval 2 plays an important role in introducing young people to the game. The improved surface will enhance participation experiences while increasing the oval's capacity to host matches, training and major events.

"This upgrade will significantly improve the experience for young players and help the Colts Cricket Club continue to grow its junior programs," said Cr Klowss.

"It will also provide greater flexibility for competition scheduling and an additional reliable synthetic wicket during key events like Junior Country Week, particularly when wet weather impacts turf pitches."

The upgrade aligns with Council's Active Horsham strategy of ensuring Council owned and/or operated facilities and related programming is optimized to be inclusive and welcoming for all.

Colts Cricket Club currently supports players across all levels, including entry-level participants, juniors, and senior teams, with a strong focus on building junior pathways. The improved facility is expected to drive participation growth, with the potential to expand both introductory and junior programs over coming seasons.

Council has worked closely with Colts Cricket Club, the Horsham Cricket Association and Cricket Victoria to bring the project forward. Council will co-fund the project with a contribution of $8,496 and manage the works, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to delivering quality community infrastructure.

Once complete, the upgraded wicket will support the full cricket pathway-from beginner programs to senior competition, while enhancing capacity, improving safety and helping future-proof cricket in Horsham.
