Stillborn Memorial Consultation Opens to Public

We invite individuals, families and the community to contribute to an important conversation about remembrance, recognition and reflection.

For many families, the loss of a baby is a deeply personal experience that can be carried throughout a lifetime. Historically, many babies who were stillborn or died shortly after birth were not provided with individual recognition, and the impacts of this loss may continue to be felt by parents, siblings and loved ones today.

The Historical Stillborn Memorial Project has been established to explore opportunities for a memorial that respectfully acknowledges these babies and honours the experiences of the families who loved them.

The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board has undertaken extensive historical research to inform this project and is facilitating its development in partnership with the Historical Stillborn Memorial Committee. The Committee brings together individuals with lived experience and relevant expertise to help guide the project and ensure community perspectives are central to its development.

Community consultation is now open, and feedback is being sought to help shape the memorial and its purpose. We especially welcome contributions from individuals and families with lived experience, as well as members of the broader community who wish to share their thoughts on how remembrance and recognition can be meaningfully reflected.

We recognise that engaging with this subject matter may be difficult for some people. Information about available grief and bereavement support services is provided alongside consultation materials.

Your feedback will help inform the future direction of this important project and contribute to the creation of a meaningful place of remembrance for current and future generations.

Community consultation is now open. We invite you to share your feedback and learn more about the Historical Stillborn Memorial Project using the links below.
