Housing boost for Daly River communities

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government has invested $11.5 million towards remote housing in three Daly River communities, with the first tranche of works worth $4.9 million.

A select tender has been awarded to a joint venture between Green River Aboriginal Corporation and Big River Housing.

Ten new homes will be built in Nganmarriyanga, Nauiyu and Peppimenarti, and 25 homes will be extended and upgraded as part of the Room to Breathe program.

Additionally, two units will be constructed for government employees.

The works are part of the Government's Our Community. Our Future. Our Homes program which includes funding from the Australian Government.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps Chansey Paech:

"This tender awarded to an Aboriginal Business Enterprise joint venture is yet another example of how our remote housing program is making a huge difference across the Territory.

"We're working with Aboriginal Business Enterprises to develop local skills to build and manage housing because our program is as much about improved economies through employment and training opportunities as it is about building better homes.

"Safe, sustainable communities means a better future for everyone and that's why our unprecedented investment is so important."

Quotes attributable to Member for Daly Dheran Young:

"Nganmarriyanga, Nauiyu and Peppimenarti are set in some of the Territory's most spectacular country, but like many of our remote communities access to safe, secure housing has been a longstanding problem.

"I am proud to be part of a Government that is addressing those issues, and making a difference.

"I know the residents are looking forward to works commencing, and to the jobs and training opportunities that will be on offer." Paech
