Boosting Grid Reliability, Energy Efficiency

World Bank

Investing in Industrial Energy Savings and Jobs

WASHINGTON, June 26, 2026 - To sustain Cambodia's progress in expanding access to electricity and support the country's next phase of energy development, sustainable growth and job creation, the World Bank today approved a new Sustainable Energy Transition Project.

The project, financed by a $110 million credit from the World Bank's International Development Association, along with a US$5 million grant from the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), will help Cambodia to transition to green economy. The investment will ultimately benefit electricity consumers, public institutions, industrial enterprises, renewable energy developers, service providers, and energy-efficiency equipment suppliers, creating more and better jobs in the sector.

"Cambodia has achieved remarkable success in expanding electricity access. By strengthening the grid and helping businesses use energy more efficiently, this project will help support a clean transition that shields the economy from global energy volatility, drives growth, boosts competitiveness, and creates quality jobs," said World Bank Country Manager, Tania Meyer.

Cambodia's electricity demand has grown rapidly, due to industrialization, urbanization, and rising living standards. While electricity access is now nearly universal, the country's next energy challenge is to make the power system more reliable, affordable, resilient, and increasingly clean. The project is the Phase 7 of the Accelerating Sustainable Energy Transition Multiphase Programmatic Approach (MPA) in East Asia and Pacific Region.

"Guided by the principles of CARE-Clean, Affordable, Reliable, and Equitable energy-Cambodia is committed to a just energy transition that supports people, businesses, and long-term national development," said H.E. Keo Rottanak, Minister of Mines and Energy.
