How Right Sports Bra Could Help Mums Return To Sport

Researchers investigate breast changes after pregnancy to help design better sports bras and boost women's participation in physical activity

University of Wollongong (UOW) researchers are investigating how pregnancy and breastfeeding changes a woman's breasts with the aim of helping mothers return to sport and exercise after having a baby.

The findings of the first-of-its-kind study could help address one of the major obstacles for women in elite and community sport - a correct-fitting sports bra - and increase participation for women in physical activity during childbearing years.

Led by Professor Deirdre McGhee, from UOW's Breast Research Australia, and Master of Philosophy student Analeise Leiter, the study will fill a major research gap at a time when opportunities for women in sport have rapidly increased.

"We know that the structure of breasts change during and after pregnancy and breastfeeding, but how this affects the biomechanics of the breasts and the breast support required has not previously been investigated. Participation in sports and physical activity among women is already lower than for men at every stage of life, and it drops even further during and after pregnancy," Ms Leiter said. "This creates a significant gap, not just in terms of elite-level performance, but also in everyday health, wellbeing and social inclusion."

The research combines biomechanics testing with women's personal experiences gathered through an anonymous online survey. By combining personal perceptions with lab-based data, the project will help the researchers to better understand breast changes and design practical guidelines that can support women's return to sport and exercise.

"This isn't just a study for elite athletes, it's for every mum who wants to feel comfortable getting to the gym, back to the park run, or onto the sporting field," said Professor McGhee, an expert in breast health and sport who has contributed to international and national policies on female athletes in sport. "A well-fitting, supportive sports bra is a simple, affordable solution that can make a big difference to comfort, confidence, performance and participation."
