GENEVA - The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold an urgent debate on "the aerial attack on Shajareh Tayyebeh Girl's School in Minab, Iran, as a grave breach of international humanitarian law and international human rights."
The urgent debate will be held on Friday, 25 March 2026, starting at 9:00 am (GMT+1) in the Assembly Hall at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The meeting is open to the media and will be webcast live on webtv.un.org in the six official languages of the UN.
The urgent debate is being convened following an official request submitted on Monday, 23 March 2026 by the Islamic Republic of Iran, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Cuba. The Minab school strike of 28 February 2026 will be discussed in the context of the "protection of children and educational institutions in international armed conflicts," as outlined in the request.
The programme of work for the ongoing 61st regular session of the Human Rights Council has been adjusted to include this urgent debate. This urgent debate does not require signatories or formal notifications as is the case for special sessions.
This will be the 12th urgent debate of the Human Rights Council since its creation in 2006. The 11th urgent debate took place earlier in the 61st session on Wednesday 25 March 2026 and concerned recent military aggression by Iran against Gulf States and Jordan.
