On 1 October 2025, the First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court ("ICC"), Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala, and Registrar Osvaldo Zavala Giler, met with Spain's Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, H.E. Mr José Manuel Albares Bueno, in Madrid (Spain).
Vice-President Aitala expressed the ICC's gratitude for Spain's ongoing support and dedication to upholding the international rule of law as well as the mandate of the Court. Referring to several developments that occurred since their last meeting, particularly in relation to sanctions and other coercive measures, the Vice-President discussed ways in which States can assist in mitigate their impact and in defending the independence, impartiality and integrity of the Court.
Foreign Minister Albares Bueno reiterated Spain's firm support to the ICC and its key role in the fight against impunity and the maintenance of international peace and security. Its work is needed more than ever.
