Illawarra man charged over the murder of Nathan Costello, NSW

A man will face court today after being charged over the alleged murder of Nathan Costello in the Illawarra earlier this year, NSW Police say.

Police and emergency services were called to a home on Carr Parade, Unanderra, about 2.15am on Valentine’s Day (Wednesday 14 February 2018), following reports of a drive-by shooting.

On arrival, officers from Lake Illawarra Police District found a man suffering a gunshot wound and conducted CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, the man died at the scene.

The man was formally identified as 33-year-old local, Nathan Costello.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and Lake Illawarra Police District established Strike Force Gangele to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Following extensive investigations, a 33-year-old man was arrested by strike force officers during a vehicle stop on Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong, about 12.45pm yesterday (Thursday 12 July 2018).

Shortly after the arrest, Strike Force Gangele detectives executed a search warrant at a home at Koonawarra, where they seized a number of items relevant to the investigation.

The Koonawarra man was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court later today (Friday 13 July 2018).

Investigations under Strike Force Gangele are continuing and further arrests are expected.

Police are urging anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Gangele investigators with their inquiries to call Crime Stoppers.
