- $4.5 million package to support South West food organics and garden organics transport costs
- Rebate increased to a flat $95 per tonne
- Supporting seven South West local governments to continue organics recycling
- Cook Government committed to protecting and restoring the environment
The Cook Government has increased our offer of funding to support seven South West local governments to deliver food organics and garden organics (FOGO) services to their communities.
The South West FOGO Transport Rebate has been expanded from $2.7 million to $4.5 million, with a flat rebate of $95 per tonne from 1 July 2026.
The funding provides interim support while work continues toward a longer-term, regionally sustainable processing solution for the South West.
Delivering effective waste services is a core responsibility of local government and through this funding boost, the State Government is supporting South West communities to maintain their long-standing commitment to FOGO.
FOGO services divert valuable organic material from landfill, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and returning it to productive use as compost, supporting soil health and the circular economy.
As stated by the Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
"Local governments are working hard to deliver FOGO services for their communities, and the State Government is backing them in.
"We've listened to councils in the South West and responded to higher-than-anticipated transport costs by increasing the offer to provide a rebate of $95 per tonne over three years.
"This funding provides important interim support while longer-term arrangements for sustainable FOGO processing in the region are developed.
"Recycling organics is critical to reducing landfill, cutting emissions and supporting Western Australia's waste strategy."
As stated by South West Minister Don Punch:
"The funding ensures South West councils can continue delivering FOGO services despite rising transport costs.
"Communities across the South West have embraced organics recycling, and this support helps households keep doing the right thing without placing extra pressure on local governments.
"Sustaining FOGO services protects our regional environment, strengthens the circular economy, and delivers longterm value for ratepayers."
As stated by Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns:
"South West communities have led the way on FOGO for years and this funding recognises the reality of operating regional services across long distances.
"This rebate gives councils certainty while a long-term processing solution is developed for the region, and I'm pleased to have strongly advocated for this outcome on behalf of our communities.
"Diverting food and garden waste from landfill cuts emissions and returns nutrients to our soils - that's good for our environment and good for regional Western Australia."
