Inmate at Atlantic Institution Dies

On September 24, 2023, Matthew Marshall, an inmate from Atlantic Institution, died while in our custody.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 10 years, 9 months and 6 days for Robbery, Failure to Comply with Probation Officer, Possession of a Prohibited/Restricted Firearm with Ammunition x2, Assault Causing bodily harm x3, Possession of Schedule I Substance, Assault with Intentional Use of Force, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm/Prohibited or Restricted Weapon in Motor Vehicle, Possession of Weapon Contrary to Prohibiton Order, Assault Peace Officer x2, Carrying Concealed Weapon, and Prison Breach with Intent, since May 13, 2014.

The inmate's next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
