University of Melbourne Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis AC and University Secretary, Dr Nancy Huggett appeared at the Legislative Assembly Economy and Infrastructure Committee's inquiry into enhancing Victorian university governance on Friday 15 May.
Professor Davis' appearance complemented the University's submission to the inquiry which includes eight recommendations for the Victorian Government to consider. The University's submission can be read here.
Professor Davis welcomed the opportunity to contribute to the Inquiry.
"The Inquiry presents an opportunity for Victorian universities to engage constructively with this process, alongside our ongoing engagement with the Australian Government's review and release of the Final Report and Principles from the Expert Council on University Governance report last year.
"Universities across Australia are being asked to demonstrate that their governance meets the standards expected of publicly-spirited institutions.
University of Melbourne Chancellor Jane Hansen AO said: "Good governance is an enduring priority for the University of Melbourne. It is fundamental to our academic mission and operating sustainability. The University has long invested in the structures and frameworks that underpin accountable and transparent decision-making alongside active engagement with our staff, students and stakeholders at all levels."
"A well-governed university system is essential to Australia's future. This is a principle that the University of Melbourne has upheld for generations.
"We remain committed to working constructively with federal and state governments and our regulator. The University's contribution to this Inquiry further advances this work.
"We continue to strengthen the structures already in place in our institution that give staff and students a genuine voice in how we govern, and appreciate their contributions. I encourage the Committee to consider what is already working well, alongside what might be improved."
