International art featuring in regions

  • There Were Moments of Transformation opens in Albany on July 3
  • Further support for regional art, with State Government's Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund
  • An exhibition that explores the power and fragility of transformation through sculpture, jewellery and ceramics will open at Albany Town Hall tomorrow (July 3).

There Were Moments of Transformation features artworks from the Art Gallery of WA (AGWA) collection and is the second of the Western Australian touring program Freighting Ideas.

It is the first time works by international artists including Auguste Rodin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and William Kentridge have travelled WA. They are displayed alongside works by local artists such as Lucy Yukenbarri and Bethamy Linton.

The exhibition asks audiences to consider the transformation process of art, of how materials change, how they change people, and how they change the world around us.

There Were Moments of Transformation is presented by ART ON THE MOVE (AOTM), and the AGWA. It is in Albany until August 15, before moving on to Bunbury Regional Art Gallery.

In a further boost for art in regional WA, applications are now open for the McGowan Government's Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund.

Administered by AOTM, the fund supports arts activities through improvements and upgrades to eligible public arts and cultural galleries in regional Western Australia.

Funds are available for minor or major scale upgrades and COVID-19 recovery initiatives. The funding will also ensure the galleries have the capacity required to host visual art exhibitions and activities in the future as part of the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost (RETB).

The RETB is an $8 million election commitment creating more opportunities for regional Western Australians to engage with visual arts, by increasing the number of touring exhibitions to regional towns and communities.

The RETB is delivered by AOTM and the AGWA, and is managed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

"Touring exhibitions enrich our communities and activate our regional centres. They also provide vital economic activity and enable more regional Western Australians to engage with culture and the arts.

"Through the Public Regional Galleries Improvement Fund, more regional galleries will be positioned to bring art to regional audiences in future."

As stated by Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens:

"There Were Moments of Transformation is a fantastic exhibition that has been generating a lot of interest since it commenced touring WA and I am thrilled to see it coming to Albany.
