Wyndham residents are being invited to take part in a range of celebrations across the City for International Women's Day (IWD) which is celebrated on Friday 8th March 2022.
Welcoming City, Portfolio Holder, Cr Jenny Barrera encouraged residents to get involved and celebrate with the array of activities and events on offer.
"Across the world, thousands of events are held for IWD to inspire and celebrate the achievements of women, so I'm incredibly proud that as a local, a woman and as a Wyndham City Councillor there's so much on offer in our own backyard," Cr Barrera said.
"This year's theme for International Women's Day (IWD) is 'Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow. Changing Climates: Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow - a theme that recognises the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are working to change the climate of gender equality and build a sustainable future."
"Events being held across Wyndham for International Women's Day include an online event; featuring renowned guest speaker Kate Christie, 'Me First: How to find all the time you need to prioritise yourself". Celebrating women in Wyndham and empowering them to future proof their life and career by looking at time differently through key time management skills on Tuesday 8 March, from 7pm to 8pm."
"The annual 'Women in Business luncheon' celebrates the achievements of local Wyndham women in business. Local women will share their perspectives of living and working in Wyndham."
"Our local libraries are also getting in on the occasion with book displays and reading lists for children and adults celebrating women and girls."
A free event run at the Wyndham Cultural Centre by Mita Chowdhury, a Wyndham based artist will celebrate IWD with KANTHA and the making of a Community Quilt on Tuesday 8 March from 6.30pm to 8pm.
KANTHA is a centuries-old Bengali tradition of stitching patchwork where women reuse the softest part of their cotton sarees to make hand stitched quilts. Making a Kantha is a long, slow, laboursome process that often involves a group of women meeting regularly to create beautiful embroidery with repetitive running stitches.
"By holding the types of events like we are in Wyndham, we can change perceptions in the community and move our culture towards one that is more equal," Cr Barrera said.
