Intersection Upgrade Eases Eastern Brisbane Traffic

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The Wynnum Road and Hemmant Tingalpa Road intersection has been upgraded, improving safety and traffic flow for residents, commuters and businesses in Tingalpa and Brisbane's eastern suburbs.

The $10.9 million project, jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Roads to Recovery Program (over $8.7 million) and Brisbane City Council (over $2.1 million), improves safety and helps traffic to move smoothly with the introduction of new traffic lights, which connects local neighbourhoods and supports growing travel demand along this busy corridor.

The project also included signalised pedestrian crossings, new and upgraded footpaths and kerb ramps, and changes to the intersection layout to better manage turning movements.

Dedicated turn pockets have been constructed on all approaches to separate turning vehicles from through traffic, improving safety for motorists.

The upgrade also provides signalised U-turn facilities on Wynnum Road, allowing vehicles travelling in both directions to safely and clearly perform U-turns, while maintaining efficient traffic flow through the intersection.

A new section of footpath along Hemmant Tingalpa Road will improve access for walking and riding, with upgraded kerb ramps enhancing accessibility for people of all abilities.

Brisbane is one of Australia's fastest growing cities and, like in many suburbs, traffic along this corridor has increased.

High traffic volumes and extended wait times at the intersection have made it difficult for motorists to safely enter and exit Hemmant Tingalpa Road.

Traffic signals have been installed, and the intersection has been upgraded to ease congestion to make it easier for all road users to get around sooner and safer.

The final design reflects community feedback received during consultation, with locals highlighting the need for safer pedestrian crossings and easier movement through the intersection.

By improving how vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists move through the intersection, the upgrade will support more reliable day‑to‑day journeys for people who live or work in, or pass through, Tingalpa.

Construction began in early 2025 and will be completed in April 2026.
