The Tasmanian Government will invest $5 million to modernise the King Island District School, creating new opportunities for local students and strengthening the island's future workforce opportunities.
The redevelopment is being made possible through the Tasmanian Government's successful investment in the King Island Tungsten Mine, ensuring the benefits generated on King Island are reinvested back into the local community.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the upgrade would deliver modern facilities, enhanced training opportunities and help more young people access education and skills pathways closer to home.
"This is about investing in King Island's future and ensuring local young people have every opportunity to succeed on the island," Premier Rockliff said.
"The strong investment made by the Tasmanian Government to support the future of the King Island Tungsten Mine has delivered a significant return for Tasmanians, and it is only right that King Island shares directly in that success.
"Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is all about backing our regional communities, and we are backing King Island every step of the way."
The upgrade will modernise ageing facilities including redevelopment of Materials Design and Technology facilities, and supporting vocational education and skills development on the island.
"A modern, fit-for-purpose learning environment will create greater opportunities for young King Islanders and help attract and retain teachers and staff," Premier Rockliff said.
"Importantly, it will give more students the opportunity to gain skills and training closer to home, helping them build their future on King Island.
"This is a direct investment in the people of King Island and the long-term future of this vibrant community."
