The Albanese Labor Government is investing in the next generation of First Nations leaders, with Winmarra Foundation receiving $552,000 to expand its Emerging Leaders Program for a further two years from 2026-27.
Developed in response to community priorities, the Emerging Leaders Program has been shaped by local voices, with Elders playing an integral role in both the design and delivery of the program.
Through cultural connection, mentorship and community engagement, Winmarra supports emerging First Nations leaders to strengthen their cultural identity, build leadership skills and successfully transition into education, training and employment.
The investment will support the expansion of the community-led program, creating greater opportunities for First Nations young people in regional New South Wales.
It builds on the success of a 10-month pilot delivered in Brewarrina last year, which supported ten young First Nations men.
Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people into education, training and employment is a key part of delivering on Closing the Gap priorities, while also strengthening social and emotional wellbeing and community leadership.
