It's Time To Build New FOGO Habit

It's time for City of Perth residents to build a new Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) habit, as our new three-bin waste system rolls out.

FOGO makes it easy for households to combine food scraps and garden waste and turn them into compost that enriches soil in parks and gardens, helping keep more material out of landfill.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said FOGO was a tangible way for residents to reduce their carbon footprint and support a more sustainable City.

"Introducing FOGO is a habit change that can make a big difference," he said. "Food scraps and garden waste make up a large portion of what typically ends up in landfill.

"Through the FOGO system, these materials can instead be turned into compost that benefits parks, gardens and green spaces across our beautiful City."

This month, the City will start delivering lime green-lidded FOGO bins to single-dwelling residential properties and residential complexes with five or fewer units, along with a kitchen caddy and compostable caddy liners.

Throughout the rollout, eligible residents will receive information and resources to help build the FOGO habit and make separating food waste easy as part of the Creature of Habit campaign.

Informed by feedback from community consultation, the campaign helps residents learn what can and can't go in the FOGO bin and simple sorting habits to help with the transition to the new system.

You'll meet our Creature of Habit – a relatable character who loves their routines but is willing to try something new when it's for the greater good.

To support our community in building the FOGO habit, our Waste Education Team will also be door knocking and holding pop-up information sessions across the City.
