James West Centre Extension Opens in Ophthalmology

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS

A new extension to the James West Treatment Centre in our ophthalmology outpatients department has opened.

The newly refurbished space, which includes multi-use theatres to save and preserve sight in common eye conditions such age-related macular degeneration, was officially unveiled by Lord David Blunkett and Lady Blunkett.

The theatres will also be used for procedures such as oculoplastic surgery and botox injections for the treatment of certain eye conditions.

Complementing the newly refurbished and extended treatment centre is a bright and colourful new mural designed by Lisa Maltby in partnership with our Arts in Health team and funded by Sheffield Hospitals Charity.

New artwork

The mural features recognisable local features and details, providing a more welcoming and calming environment for patients on arrival.

The addition of ceiling light panels in the new treatment room, also funded by our Charity, helps visually distract patients, reducing anxiety at a daunting time. Music in the new theatres now helps to create a more relaxed atmosphere.
