Jamie Parker MP joins school protest to filter exhaust stacks

Australian Greens

Greens Member for Balmain Jamie Parker has joined parents and students from Rozelle Public School for a protest calling on Labor and Liberal to filter four toxic exhaust stacks planned for Rozelle as part of WestConnex.

One stack will be located on Victoria Road at Terry Street just metres from Rozelle Public School. Both NSW Labor and NSW Liberal do not support filtering exhaust stacks.

Comment from Jamie Parker MP: "These exhaust stacks will be pumping out toxic exhaust fumes just metres from where our kids play.

"Kids' developing lungs are particularly vulnerable to the particulate pollution contained in car exhaust. There is no level at which air pollution is completely safe, especially for more vulnerable people, children, and the elderly.

"It is common practice in many countries to filter these types of exhaust stacks in order to protect residents from the risks associated with breathing in toxic exhaust and pollution.

"By refusing to commit to filter these stacks both NSW Labor and the Liberals are ignoring the wealth of evidence that they are bad for our health.

"The Greens are calling for all exhaust stacks to be filtered in accordance with world's best practice. We also want air quality monitors in schools like Rozelle Public to make sure that traffic and pollution aren't at hazardous levels," he said.
