Jason Robert Brown to Star in UH Musical Theatre Showcase

The Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts will host a remarkable collaboration between Tony Award-winning Broadway composer Jason Robert Brown and acclaimed actress and singer Sally Mayes at the University of Houston on April 12, 2024. This concert, a highlight of the spring semester, serves as the culmination of the "Song Performance for Musical Theatre" course, a unique offering led by Sally Mayes as part of her impactful role as Artist in Residence.

The "Song Performance for Musical Theatre" course, curated by Sally Mayes, provides students with cross-disciplinary training aimed at enhancing their confidence in musical auditions and storytelling skills through song. Sally Mayes, a Tony Award and Drama Desk-nominated artist, brings her wealth of experience and expertise to the course, enriching students' learning experiences and contributing to the College's vibrant musical theatre programming.

"We're thrilled to welcome Jason Robert Brown to Houston as part of this special collaboration," said Sally Mayes. "His performance, coupled with the showcase of our talented students, underscores our commitment to providing unparalleled opportunities in musical theatre."

This collaboration exemplifies the College's dedication to expanding students' training in musical theatre. In addition to Sally Mayes' class and the upcoming showcase concert with Jason Robert Brown, the College is proud to present this year's main stage musical production of Urinetown, set to open on March 28, 2024, in our Quintero Theatre. This annual production tradition provides both Moores School of Music and School of Theatre and Dance students with invaluable opportunities to hone their skills and showcase their talents.

"We believe in providing diverse opportunities for our students to excel and become well-rounded artists," remarked Andrew Davis, Dean of the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts. "This collaboration, alongside Sally Mayes' impactful class and our commitment to annual musical productions such as Urinetown, underscores our dedication to fostering the artistic growth and development of our students, preparing them to shine in all aspects of the performing arts."

The concert will feature University of Houston students in the first act, followed by Jason Robert Brown performing selections from his repertoire, including new compositions and pieces from his solo albums. The concert will survey the broad scope of his work as a composer and artist. "We're absolutely thrilled to welcome Jason Robert Brown to Houston for what promises to be an extraordinary performance," said Sally Mayes. "It not only serves as a fitting conclusion to our 'Song Performance for Musical Theatre' course but also as a celebration of the enduring magic of musical storytelling."
