Fighting against the impacts of ghost gear and marine litter was a passion for the late Joanna Toole, former FAO staff member, who was tragically killed when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed en route to Nairobi on 10 March 2019. To honour her work, a marine environment grant has been created. The Joanna Toole GloLitter Partnerships Grant will ensure that Joanna's legacy lives on, and that her work and dedication in improving the health of the ocean for the people and animals that depend on it will continue to be an inspiration for us all.
The Grant is managed by Ocean Conservancy on behalf of the GloLitter Project, in close partnership with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Proposed projects should be those which are aimed at improving the health of marine ecosystems, safeguarding human health and livelihoods, and protecting aquatic life from harm. Projects should empower women in developing countries working to address marine plastic litter and abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear.
Applications are invited for the the Joanna Toole GloLitter Grant. Eligible applicants will be non-profits or similar registered entities with strong female leadership in developing countries. Applications close on Monday, 19 July 2021. More information here.
