Our Women's team at Department of Communities (Communities) is gearing up for another empowering International Women's Day (IWD) in 2026, held on 8 March each year.
International Women's Day provides a great chance for the Western Australian community to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to highlight the work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality in Western Australia.
Communities, as the lead government agency on Women's Interests policy has adopted the UN Women Australia's theme for IWD this year, Balance the Scales.
Balance the Scales draws attention to the urgent need for a justice system that is fair, inclusive, and accessible to all women and girls , and closely aligns with Stronger Together: WA's Plan for Gender Equality and supports the principles and four priority areas of the Plan.
The theme highlights ongoing barriers such as low conviction rates in sexual assault cases, systemic discrimination, and challenges faced by First Nations women, including overrepresentation in the justice system and limited access to culturally safe legal support.
Communities will be promoting the messages of International Women's Day in the week leading up to 8 March.
There are many ways that individuals, groups and organisations can get involved in IWD 2026 and share messages.
