The CommBank Junior Matildas have qualified for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup™ for the first time in history after a 2-0 victory over Vietnam at the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup 2026™ quarter-final.
Frida Karaberis and Leyla Hussein were the goalscorers on a historic day for Australian football.
Head Coach Michael Cooper made four changes to the side that were defeated by Japan in the final group stage game. Dali Gorr Burchmore came back into goals, while Claire Corbett, Theo Mouithys Mickalad and Willa Pearson were into the starting eleven. Pearson took the captain's armband.
Australia applied pressure from the outset. Vietnam defended stoutly, however, and it was never going to be easy to find the breakthrough.
It finally came in the 28th minute. Frida Karaberis reacted quickest after a shot from Kaya Jugovic was palmed away. She tucked home the rebound, giving the Junior Matildas a well-earned lead.
That margin doubled soon after thanks to Leyla Hussein. A long diagonal ball from Claire Corbett found the run of Hussein, whose delightful lob over the goalkeeper found the back of the net.
Australia were not fully able to put the game to bed in the second half but defended well in transition and earned their quarter-final victory with a clean sheet and a professional performance.
The team will take on Japan in the semi-finals.
