GENEVA - We welcome the Brazilian Supreme Court's conviction yesterday in the emblematic case of five people, including two former lawmakers and a former police commissioner, for their roles in the 2018 murder of Rio de Janeiro councillor and human rights defender Marielle Franco, and her driver Anderson Gomes.
Franco was a vocal advocate against racism and discrimination based on gender, and sexual orientation, which she personally experienced. She had also spoken out against police brutality.
While two former policemen were convicted in 2024 for her murder, the fight for full accountability has continued. The convictions of these five people who planned and ordered her death serve as a powerful statement against impunity, and contribute to the realization of truth and justice for victims.
This case should prompt Brazil's institutions to act boldly against systemic racism and discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation, and ensure that all victims receive timely, impartial, and effective access to justice.
