The final countdown to the opening of the eagerly anticipated Karratha Health Campus has begun, and the emergency department will open its doors at 8am on Wednesday September 19, 2018.
At the same time the new state-of-the-art facility opens, the emergency department at Nickol Bay Hospital will close and anyone requiring emergency medical treatment will need to attend the new Karratha Health Campus.
Today's announcement is part of a public information campaign to ensure residents from Karratha and surrounding communities know where to go in the event of an emergency.
The staged opening of Karratha Health Campus will begin on Monday September 17. The first outpatients will be welcomed on Tuesday September 18. The final inpatient move and emergency department opening will occur at 8am on Wednesday September 19. PathWest appointments will commence at the new campus from September 19.
The new Karratha Health Campus boasts an expanded emergency department, a brand new surgical centre plus a new maternity wing and delivery suites. Essential services such as medical imaging and world-class telehealth services are also incorporated into the facility, along with a new outpatients' area.
This infrastructure project, along with many others across the State, is just one part of a modernisation program taking place across the WA Country Health Service (WACHS).
Improvements to infrastructure along with new patient information systems and a virtual workforce provided by telehealth and Emergency Telehealth Services combine to provide the best possible care for Karratha and surrounding communities in the West Pilbara.
The WACHS board visited the new health campus during one of its regional meetings held in Karratha. Professor Neale Fong said that the board was proud of what the project has been able to achieve for the Pilbara community.
