Key Development Confirmed for Strategic Southern CBD

Devonport City Council Tasmania

Located at a pivotal entry point to the Devonport CBD, the site at 6-10 Steele Street has been earmarked for a major new development, with Devonport City Council confirming its sale as part of broader city renewal plans.

Originally acquired by Council in 2013 due to its long-term strategic value, the exciting new development is another key part of councils successful LIVING CITY Master Plan. The private development will introduce essential community services and generate significant commercial activity, further contributing to the revitalisation of the Southern CBD precinct.

Deputy Mayor Cr Stacey Sheehan said the development marks another significant step in delivering Council's LIVING CITY vision for a more vibrant city centre bringing long-term benefits through improved services, economic growth, and enhanced urban amenity.

"This development will deliver critical health services for our community and region, and its quality and scale are fitting for such a prominent location. It will be a landmark building at the entrance to the CBD and realises the ambitious and bold vision the council had when purchasing the property." Deputy Mayor Sheehan said.

"Positioned at the gateway to the Devonport CBD, 6-10 Steele Street has always been a key strategic site. The proposed investment supports our LIVING CITY goals and reflects the City's continued growth and confidence." Deputy Mayor Sheehan said.

"This will be another major step forward for the southern CBD of Devonport, an area that is virtually unrecognisable from the early 2000's when it was known for its nightclub strip and vacant buildings."

Council have sold the site to Fairbrother Pty Ltd for $1.815 million. Fairbrother Pty Ltd will undertake the $40 million private investment development, with the State Government leasing the facility.

The arrangement will see the continuation of public carparking on the site.

The existing tenant will vacate the property in September with demolition works expected to start shortly afterwards.

Council will continue to work closely with the development team to ensure the project delivers strong outcomes for the community and contributes to the success of the broader CBD renewal.
