Key Road Safety Upgrades On Way

Swan Hill Rural City Council is set to deliver three important road safety projects across Swan Hill thanks to Victorian Government's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, delivered in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC.)

The funding will support:

  • Beveridge Street – traffic lights for pedestrians with raised crossing
  • Campbell Street – traffic lights for pedestrians with raised crossing
  • Werril Street – Speed Limit Reduction and Local Area Traffic Management

Mayor Cr Stuart King said the projects would deliver significant safety improvements for pedestrians, motorists and local residents.

"These projects are about creating safer streets for everyone and ensuring our road network keeps pace with the way our community lives, moves and grows," Cr King said.

"The Beveridge Street and Campbell Street upgrades will improve pedestrian safety within our CBD, while the Werril Street project will help create a safer residential environment," he added.

Director Infrastructure, Leah Johnston said community concerns had been raised regarding both the Beveridge Street and Campbell Street pedestrian crossings, with the safety upgrades designed to address long-standing issues and improve safety for all road users.

"Works will include the installation of traffic lights for pedestrians, reconstruction of the raised crossings, new median islands, kerb outstands and upgraded line marking to improve visibility and safety," Ms Johnston said.

"At Werril Street, growing residential development has changed how the road is used, with current traffic speeds no longer appropriate for the area.

"The project will include measures to slow traffic, reduce speed limits, discourage heavy vehicles from using the street and complete a missing section of footpath to create a safer and more connected neighbourhood," she said.

Together, the projects use practical safety improvements to reduce crash risk, improve pedestrian safety and make local streets more pleasant and liveable.

Council will now commence community engagement on the proposed designs and safety improvements for each project.

Council thanked the Victorian Government and TAC for their support through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
