Kicking Off Men's Health Through Walking Football

A new community sport program led by Flinders University is launching in Mount Gambier in April 2026, and organisers are calling on local men to get involved.

The initiative offers men aged 55 and over a unique way to stay active, build friendships, and support mental health.

The walking football (soccer) program was developed through a partnership between Flinders University, the Limestone Coast Local Government Association, Walking Football Adelaide and Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation.

It aims to tackle the region's high rates of poor mental health among men by creating a safe, inclusive space for physical activity and social connection.

Walking football is a modified version of soccer designed for older adults. There's no running, no body contact, and games are played in a small-sided format. These changes make it accessible and enjoyable for men who want a gentle yet fun way to stay active.

The program kicks off in April 2026 at the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre, with weekly sessions running until later in the year. Up to 100 participants are expected, and organisers are keen to see local men step forward.

Professor Murray Drummond

Research Professor in Sport, Health and Physical Activity, Professor Murray Drummond, Chief Investigator on the project, says the program is about much more than sport.

"We know that social isolation and poor mental health are significant issues for older men in regional areas," says Professor Drummond from the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work.

"Walking football provides a fun, low-pressure environment where men can connect, share experiences and feel part of a community. It's about wellbeing through movement and mateship."

Participants will also have the chance to train as referees, with expert guidance from Walking Football Adelaide-offering another way to stay involved and build confidence.

Flinders University will evaluate the program's impact to help create a toolkit for other communities, ensuring this initiative sparks lasting change.

"This is your chance to take a step towards better health, stronger connections and a more active lifestyle. We're looking for men aged 55 and over to join the program," says Professor Drummond.

"If you think walking football might be for you-or someone you know-register your interest today."
