For the first time, close to 1,800 children from all seven primary schools in the Hedland area are taking part in the 2020 Schools Clean Up Day.
They will be joined by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson and international hockey stars Aaron Kleinschmidt from the Kookaburras and Beck Greiner from the Hockeyroos.
The massive clean-up effort, co-ordinated by local environment group Care for Hedland, kicks off with a special assembly event at South Hedland Primary School before clean-up efforts across the seven schools.
The other six schools to take part in the clean-up are Port Hedland Primary School, St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School, Baler Primary School, Cassia Primary School, Yandeyarra Remote Community School and Strelley Community School.
The two community schools were the only schools in the district to take part in the clean-up event last year.
Today’s clean-up event, as part of the nationwide 2020 Schools Clean Up Day, is in the lead up to Sunday’s Clean Up Australia Day which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

As stated by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:
“As a proud member of the Hedland community, it is wonderful to have the opportunity to take part in this Schools Clean Up Australia event and support Western Australian kids making a difference in their local environment.
“It’s also great to support the work of Care for Hedland which does a tremendous job across the region in a number of important environmental areas – including co-ordinating Clean Up Australia events for the Hedland community.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a reminder that we all need to do our bit to keep our local communities clean and free of waste.
“The McGowan Government Containers for Change scheme starting on June 2 will do a lot to help but there is more to be done.
“Clean Up Australia Day is an event that keeps growing in support and last year saw more than 650 sites and over 71,000 volunteers take part here in Western Australia.
“That equated to more than 143,000 volunteer hours and the removal of almost 1400 ute loads of rubbish across the State.”
